Ray Funk has 31 years’ experience working in a variety of administrative, coaching, and instructional positions within the athletics field at both the higher education and secondary school levels. Currently, he serves as the Director of Athletics at Yakima Valley College in Yakima, WA. He has extensive experience dealing with a wide-array of athletic administrative matters including (but not limited to: coaching /personnel development, fundraising, Title IX issues, student-athlete academic performance, facility improvements, and cultivating relationships with media/public.
Funk has a proven track record of success including earning multiple “A.D. of the Year” and “Coach of the Year” honors. In a basketball coaching career that spanned 30 seasons, teams he was directly involved with won 440 games—this includes winning NWAC championships in 2022 and 2008, 6 league titles, 3 district titles, and qualifying for 16 post-season championship tournaments.
In addition to his formal professional roles, Funk has gained valuable leadership experience through involvement with several sports committees and community boards including the NWAC Executive Board, the Parker Youth and Sports Foundation, and the Yakima Valley Sports Commission.
Funk’s experience also includes a stint working in the front office of the NBA’s Miami Heat while he was earning his MS degree in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University. He received his BA degree in Social Studies and Secondary Education in 1992, graduating summa cum laude from Washington State University. He and his wife Lonni have one son, Trey (21).
