About the Position:

Magnum’s Painting & Wallcovering Division is looking for an experienced and proven Division Head to inspire, lead, and ensure the success of the division and it’s employees. The Division Head is responsible for all hiring and management of division office employees, overseeing the bidding process, contract development, strategic planning, and project management. The candidate should have all the seasoned skills used to build an already-successful career: technical digital take-off skills, software and technology skills, people skills, good communication skills, a great reputation, and a deep knowledge of the industry.

Location: San Jose, CA

Compensation: $175,000-235,000 (dependent on qualifications)

Job Duties

Hiring, Interviewing, New Personnel, Training and Reviews:

  • Develop and maintain Job Descriptions for all positions in the Painting & Wallcovering Division.
  • Search for new hires and personnel; conduct job interviews, testing and evaluations for hire; develop Letters of Understandings for all new hires, seek and get approval from President / CEO for hires, and coordinate final hiring.
  • Coordinate and facilitate new-hire office seating, equipment, and all items necessary for their first day and thereafter.
  • Schedule & implement one-month reviews, reviewing hiring processes, our representation of the company and job opening vs reality, and receiving constructive criticism from new- hires.
  • Schedule, implement, and conduct regular quarterly performance reviews of all office personnel within the Painting & Wallcovering Division, as well as annual compensation reviews.
  • Monitor set goals, and report to President for approval of all compensation adjustments within set companywide salary ranges; follow-through to make sure that compensation adjustments are actually given.
  • Train new-hires as necessary, even if for other teams, taking them as necessary from ‘zero’ to performance of their job description fully: OST Training; Word documents used; Excel spreadsheets used; Procore; and procedures for submission of bids; BasisBoard use, Bid Processes, and other pertinent training.

Bidding Oversight:

  • Continuously review BasisBoard, interfacing with our Bid Coordinator to make sure projects are assigned to the proper team members for bidding, coordinating and making sure projects for bid are not duplicated for double-take-off, and monitoring our Bid Schedule so as to not have anyone with too light a bid-schedule, nor to overload any one person to the point that they are burning out or working inordinate hours when compared with the average person in our Painting & Wallcovering Division.
  • To confer with the division team to evaluate bid requests together; coordinate with Bid Coordinator to vet out non-union projects; instigate SOB when projects make sense and desirable.
  • When conflicts occur on oversight of BasisBoard, communicate with all parties involved and make a final decision on bid coverage assignments.
  • Help on bidding when overloads occur, after communication instigated by PE’s, to relieve overload and provide timely bids for all parties on the bid board.
  • Review and strategize with team members for final bid amounts as necessary to win projects.
  • Help develop relationships with all teams and their customers, accompanying team members on meetings with customers when advantageous for the purpose of PR and gaining market share.
  • Develop and maintain price lists for various vendors, making them available for the whole Division as needed.
  • Develop and maintain reference materials, making them available for the whole Division as needed.

Contract Development, Review and Approval:

  • Train team Estimators and PE’s to critically review and accept contracts, including pricing, scope, qualifications, inclusions and exclusions, and adherence to our bid and scope letters.
  • To be available upon request to review problematic contracts and be involved in contract negotiations if needed. 
  • Ensure that all contracts meet with minimum standards, including inclusions of PCA and SSPC references.
  • Develop and manage contracts for our subs, along with PCO Logs, to track their obligations to Magnum. 

Painting Division Directional Oversight:

  • Setting metric goals on Metronome and review weekly, at quarterly performance reviews, and at yearly compensation reviews.
  • Facilitate tracking of metrics to spreadsheets formatting of, and reporting of month-by-month and yearly Contracts and Sales goals and actual performances by estimating teams; meet monthly with division to review results.
  • Develop and maintain customer list and assignments; periodic reviews of volume and profit by customer to drop, add or realign Magnum’s customer base.
  • Attend and lead daily Painting Division office team huddle sessions.
  • Prepare and distribute motivational and self-improvement ideas either in written form or by audios or visuals.
  • Continue to innovate new ideas, implementing them with the help and approval of ownership and management, to improve procedures, software, goals-setting, strategies, and personnel mindset.
  • To ensure that all division personnel are living and carrying out the policies, Purpose, and Core Values within Magnum’s culture throughout employment.

Collaborate with Leadership, Ownership, other Magnum Divisions:

  • Keep the President & CEO abreast of major changes and directional impacts occurring in the Painting & Wallcovering Division personnel.
  • Bring to Leaderships’ attention any major mistakes and negative financial impacts relating to the Painting & Wallcovering Division.
  • Participate in daily Leadership huddles, quarterly Leadership meetings, and annual Leadership meetings.
  • Discuss personnel reviews and seek approval for compensation adjustments, special bonuses or rewards, any potential problems, and for hiring and firing.
  • Make Ownership aware of any ideas or motivational suggestions which could benefit the company as a whole.
  • Take on special projects for Leadership and/or Ownership, which might help the company as a whole but which would also help the Painting & Wallcovering Division (Ex: Bonus Program overhaul; Magnum Website overhaul).
  • Look for collaborative opportunities to include other divisions in new customers, new bids, and new negotiating opportunities.
  • Seek to help other divisions when their opportunities increase by including a Painting or Wallcovering bid in with their bid submission.
  • Seek to further opportunities for multi-trade discounts as needed to secure a larger market share for Magnum but utilizing multiple trades, even if that means initially that profit is decreased for Painting & Wallcovering.
  • Oversee and manage smaller Painting & Wallcovering projects for other divisions where the Painting and Wallcovering scope is set up under that division’s job number, but which to make the Painting and Wallcovering scope successful, our division needs to submit, order, and interact with both that division and
    our own Foremen to make the project successful overall for the other division.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, U.S. citizenship, current clear DMV report, proof-of-insurance, and clear periodic drug tests when requested.
  • If driving your own vehicle, vehicle must be late model and in good driving condition to fulfill work commitments and model success.
  • Good personal hygiene, professional appearance and conduct, all of which translates into non-offensive behavior for customers and fellow employees.
  • Disciplined sleep-schedules allowing consistent, prompt, and alert early morning start-times and consistent show-up times.
  • A plethora of experience in the Painting and Wallcovering trades, with management and oversight skills visible to all and respect for fellow employees and teams managed.

Required Skills

  • Expert blueprint-reading skills, with a proficient skill at knowing and understanding specifications, plans, digital plan files, OST, Word, Excel, Procore, BasisBoard, FTP sites, and other necessary programs, typing skills, and an ability to train on all all program.
  • Intimate acquaintance with and detailed understanding of the PCA Standards and SSPC Standards, and an ability to integrate these standards into daily team and division discussions, bids, and project management duties, using them to Magnum’s advantage whenever possible.
  • Excellent math, English and writing skills.
  • Excellent people-skills and a proactive approach in confronting problems, interaction with customers, and developing long-term relationships.
  • A multi-tasker, able to juggle many tasks and interruptions and yet efficiently accomplish all; the ability to work in a multi-person office environment with many people side-by-side, interacting where appropriate and yet able to focus on individual work; the ability to have patience when interrupted by other team or division personnel, meeting their immediate needs while still meeting personal schedules and expectations of management.
